Overview
This guide will show you how to add HBore (horizontal boring) or other edge operations to your joint fasteners in Mozaik. This is useful when you need custom drilling operations on the edges of your panels at joint locations.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Navigate to Joint Fasteners
- Open your project in Mozaik
- Go to the Hardware Tab
- Select Joint Templates section

Step 2: Select or Add Fasteners
You have two options:
Option A: Use Existing Fastener
- Select the dowels or fasteners in an existing selection
Option B: Create New Fastener
- Click to add a new fastener to your selection

Step 3: Set Fastener Type to Custom
- Locate the "Fastener Type" dropdown menu
- Select "Custom" from the options
This allows you to configure custom operations for your fasteners.

Step 4: Configure Female Operations
- In the Female operations section, select "Male Edge"
- Choose your operation type:
- "Center" - for centered operations
- "Dowel" - for dowel-specific operations
- Or both, depending on your needs

Step 5: Open the Operations Editor
- Click the image in the center of the fastener configuration
- This will open the operations editor window
Step 6: Add Hole Operation
- In the operations editor, click to add a new operation
- Select "Hole" operation type
- Configure the hole parameters as needed (diameter, depth, etc.)

Step 7: Add Fastener Locations
⚠️ Important: You must define where the fasteners will be placed on your joints.
- Add the fastener locations in the configuration
- Specify spacing, offset, or specific placement as required for your design

Step 8: Add to Fastener Selection in Parameters
- Navigate to your project parameters
- Add this fastener configuration to the fastener selection
- Apply to your joints or assemblies as needed

Verifying Your Operations
Important Note About 3D Viewer
⚠️ The operations will NOT show in the 3D viewer. This is normal behavior.
How to Verify Operations Are Active
To confirm your edge operations are working correctly:
- Open the Part Editor
- Select the part with the fasteners
- Review the operations list to see your custom hole operations
- Check that operations appear at the correct locations and edges
Common Use Cases
This technique is helpful for:
- Adding horizontal boring operations for shelf pins
- Creating custom dowel configurations
- Adding edge drilling for special hardware
- Configuring non-standard fastener patterns
- Automating repetitive edge operations
Troubleshooting
Problem: Operations not showing in 3D viewer
✅ This is normal. Use the Part Editor to verify instead.
Problem: Operations not appearing in Part Editor
- Verify you selected "Custom" in Fastener Type
- Check that you added the fastener locations
- Confirm the fastener selection is applied in parameters
- Make sure Male Edge is selected in Female operations
Problem: Holes appearing in wrong locations
- Review your fastener location settings
- Check the edge selection (Male Edge vs. Female Edge)
- Verify Center/Dowel settings match your intent
Problem: Can't find the operations editor
- Look for the image/icon in the center of the fastener configuration
- Make sure you're in the Joint Fasteners section (not Panel Fasteners)
Tips for Success
💡 Always verify in Part Editor - Don't rely on 3D viewer for custom operations
💡 Save your custom fasteners - Once configured, save this fastener type for reuse in other projects
💡 Test on a simple joint first - Before applying to complex assemblies, test on a basic joint to ensure operations are correct
💡 Document your settings - Keep notes on hole sizes and depths for consistency across projects
